Dedication of Children
It's exciting whenever a new child enters a family. There's no greater moment when
parents sense that children are a gift from God.
In these joyful moments, parents can express their full appreciation to God through
their child’s dedication. Here at Preston Baptist Church we are always happy to have
a special dedication services.
Dedication is a brief and simple ceremony where a family gives thanks to God for
the birth of a daughter or son, and the parent(s) make some promises to bring him/her
up as best as they are able.
For some this will involve the commitment to raise their child within the Christian
faith. A prayer of blessing is then said for the family, asking for God’s help and
wisdom in the days and years ahead.
(Please note that this is not the same as baptism or ‘christening’ - See the Beliefs
Page)
Dedicating a child acknowledges God's sovereignty and love not only over the child,
but also Mum and Dad. It also acknowledges that baptism is a decision the child may
make when they are more mature.
Deuteronomy 6:4 "Listen, Israel: The Lord is our God, the Lord is one! You must love
the Lord your God with your whole mind, your whole being, and all your strength.
These words I am commanding you today must be kept in mind, and you must teach
them to your children and speak of them as you sit in your house, as you walk along
the road, as you lie down, and as you get up."
The dedication normally takes place on a Sunday morning, during the first part of
the service. There is no charge for this ceremony, and further information or enquiries
can be made from the ministers via the church office on (01803) 522541.or via the
